How to Thread a Sewing Machine – Step-by-Step

  1. Check if the needle is already in it’s highest position, if not just turn the handwheel towards you.
  2. The presser foot must be in it’s upward position so if it’s not, place it accordingly.
  3. Make sure the spool holder already has a spool of thread
  4. Look for a tension mechanism and bring the thread downward towards it. The thread should slip between the metal disks of the tension mechanism.
  5. Find the area of the machine that goes up and down on the handwheel’s turn (referred to as the take up mechanism). The thread should be placed through the take up lever. Depending on your machine, you would either slide the thread or put it through a hole.
  6. The thread should now go downward located on the left side of the take up lever
  7. Lead down the thread down to the sewing machine needle
  8. Thread the sewing machine needle by holding the thread on your left hand and then turning the handwheel with your right.
  9. Observe carefully if any of the thread flaps. If this occurs look and see if you missed any of the thread guides.
